The images are about the contrast between the unchanging nature of diamonds and the constant shifts of human power over land. They show the sentiments on which Zimbabwe (founded as Rhodesia to attach the wealth of Africa to the British Empire) was formed, and the legacy that is now unfolding. Diamonds are both symbols of everlasting love and of ultimate power. A rock is a rock, whether diamond or granite, ruby or sandstone, whether it sits on your hand, set in gold or if it is a part of a mountain. Regardless of the vale attached to it, the rock will be unchanged. A diamond is unchanged, no matter who owns it. Land is unchanged, no matter who owns it.
The first piece contains quotes of Cecil Rhodes and the second contains the quotes of Robert Mugabe, both intersperced the slogan "diamonds are forever". Overlaying both pieces is the image from the infamous DeBeers advertising campaign that brought us the slogan 'Diamonds are forever'; the silhoutte of a woman's hand wearing a De Beers diamond engagement ring.
The quotes of Cecil Rhodes:
"The native is to be treated as a child and denied the franchise"
"We must adopt a system of despotism in our relations with the barbarians of South Africa"
"I prefer land to niggers"
"I contend that we are the first race in the world, and that the more of the world we inhabit the better it is for the human race"
The quotes of Robert Mugabe:
"Our party must continue to strike fear in the heart of the white man, our real enemy!"
"Zimbabwe is for black people not white people"
"If the choice were made, one for us to lose our sovereignty and become a member of the Commonwealth or remain with our sovereignty and lose the membership of the Commonwealth, I would say let the Commonwealth go"
